This short guide describes how to write the latest SD card image containing the latest operating system and application software to the SD card that came with your SSP.
SD card images contain a FAT32 partition named BOOT which contains samples, presets, the application software as well as operating system files. This partition can be accessed on Mac and Windows.
IMPORTANT: If you already used the SSP and wish to keep your samples and presets, you will need copy your samples and presets from the BOOT partition to your computer first before writing the new image to the card. Otherwise you will lose your work.
Step 1 - Download the SD card image
Download the latest SD card image from the software updates section in the forum. This .zip file will typically be about 8GB in size.
Unzip the file on your hard drive. Once the file is unzipped you can delete the .zip file. You will have an .img file of about 32GB when this is done. The goal is to write this .img file to the SD card using a special software tool called Etcher freely available for Mac and Windows.
On Mac OSX you might need a free tool called The Unarchiver to unzip this large file. For some reason Mac OSX’s built-in unzip tool cannot deal with large files.
Step 2 - Download and Install (free) Etcher SD Card writing software
Visit https://etcher.io/ using your web browser and download and install the Etcher software. It is available for mac and windows.
If you already have etcher and it doesn’t work anymore on your computer, update it to the latest version first. The software is updated regularly.
If Etcher (Balena) does NOT work on your windows computer you may try to use win32diskimager, which is a freely available tool and which works similarly to Etcher. You can get win32diskimager from https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
Step 3 - Flashing with Etcher on Windows
WARNING: make sure you double-check that Etcher has detected and selected your SD Card before proceeding. If you select some other USB hard drive connected to your computer it may overwrite this drive with the SD Card image! ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK WHAT DRIVE YOU ARE WRITING THE IMAGE TO! This warning ALSO applies when using win32diskimager.
Insert your SD card into your computer’s SD card reader. Ignore any questions or warnings about the SD Card and any requests to format the card.
Start etcher. Click on the + button on the left and navigate to where you unzipped the SD card image. Select the image file.
Next, click on the middle card reader icon and make sure your SD card reader is selected (it should be already, etcher is smart enough to detect it). Click continue.
Click on the Flash button. Etcher will start writing the SD card image to the card.
When Etcher is done writing it will Validate the card which typically takes about twice as long as it takes to write the card. This is important to verify that the image was written fully and correctly to the card.
When the validation of the writing is done, Etcher will automatically unmount the card and display the above message. It’s now safe to pull the card out of your computer’s card slot and insert it into the SSP and boot up.
Step 4 - Restoring your backed up samples/presets after writing the card with the new update
After the writing of the new image to the card is done, you can access the BOOT partition on your computer. You will notice it contains a presets and samples folder.
If you backed up your samples and presets folder (see above) now is the time to copy both folders onto the BOOT partition and overwrite the samples and presets folders already in the BOOT partition. This way, when you boot up on the SSP, you will have your presets and samples again from before the update.
Step 3 (alternate) - Flashing with Etcher on Mac OSX
The process to use Etcher to flash the SD card with the new image is the same on Mac OSX as it is on Windows. See above for an explanation of how to write the SD Card image using Etcher. Screenshots below for reference.
