Granular Freeze

Bug description (state clearly and simply): SSP Freezes

Steps to reproduce (use numbered list): 1. Load Sample 2. modifier paramaters

Software version (blank if unknown): Newest one for 2020

Type (major or minor): Major

Almost every time I’ve ran a granular patch and began modulating parameters my SSP freezes. The audio continues to play but all of the buttons have no effect and the knobs sometimes adjust the parameters for the page I’m on and sometimes they are all frozen. I have to then cut my system off and restart it. Is this a bug? Is there a feature or button press I’m not aware of that’s causing the module to freeze like the Qubit Nebulae? Do I need to restore the OS?

You may be turning up the number of grains parameter beyond what the processor can provide, that will cause at minimum a temporary “freeze” like you describe. The SSP allows a lot more grains than any other hardware platform I know of, but if you have both the length or time of the grain set to a longer setting, and crank up the number of grains, you can surpass even the SSP’s ability to generate all the requested grains. Try using numbers of grain similar to what the presets start with, and experiment from there. You’ll quickly get the idea of when you start to approach the limits.

That actually makes sense. I just received it and probably have the parameters too high just like you stated. Thanks for the suggestion.

if the SSP completely stops working after loading a WAV file in the granular, perhaps there is something about the file that trips up the WAV reading code. If that happens please post the properties of the file such as sample rate, number of channels, bit resolution, file size, WAV format header etc. If the file is not too big then post the file as well, if you can.

The granular does not have “safety features” buit-in, as @Mark describes, so it’s up to you to manage the parameters yourself, such as number of grains, level of the grains and so on. So this is not a bug but rather a feature.

Yeah I’m sure the issue was my handling of the granular engine. If I recall correctly I probably had the settings too high on some parameters. Otherwise, so far, so great with the SSP.
